Making a small Survival box that you have with you at all times is a good idea and when going outdoors a must. Just as with a first aid kit it is not in your packet because you plan to get into a survival situation, but because there is always a risk that an accident happens and you unexpectedly find yourself in one.

In the survival box you will have everything you need to start handling an emergency survival situation, the most important part being able to make a fire, procure emergency food and store water.

The box must be as small as possible. Getting one of those cigarette boxes that smokers carry with them everywhere is one example, a hard plastic case for matches another. In either case it should be hard, preferably airtight and have enough space to fit the following things in it.

  • Broken matches, dipped in stearic to protect them from moist.

Make sure to take normal matches, they can be ignored on any kind of material if done properly.

  • Flint and steel

Example of using a fire steel to light a fire.

The flint and steel is the primary tool to light a fire, save the matches for emergencies.

  • A small folding knife

Basic tool for survival, you can’t get far without a knife.

  • Needle, thread, fishing line and some small fishing hocks.

For patching broken clothes, making lines or fishing.

  • Some metal wire, roughly 100 cm

To make small game snares or to secure heavy objects

  • A small wiresaw without handles

To be able to cut small trees, branches, horn and bones.

  • Basic condom to store water (1 litre)

Untreated condom easily contain 1 litre of water, can be tied to store for later

  • Cotton to fill the box with until there is no empty space left.

Cotton burns very well and can be used as tinder to light a fire in poor conditions.

  • Any medicine that you can’t live without.
